Materials Needed
- Train set
Object Lesson
(Show everyone the train set.)
Have you ever played with a model train before? Some people get really excited about model trains. They will build elaborate train sets with mountains and towns and train stations. The trains will travel over the mountains and through tunnels and over bridges. Do you know what every train has in common? They always follow their leader!
Have you ever played follow the leader before? (Play a round of follow the leader with everyone following you around the room.)
Trains will always follow their engine. What do you think would happen if one of the train cars decided to not follow the leader engine anymore? (Wait for responses.) It wouldn’t go anywhere! If you were a passenger in that car you would be very upset! A train car is not very useful if it isn’t following its leader.
The Bible says in 1 Peter 2:21 that we have to follow a leader too. Do you know who that leader is? (Wait for response.) That leader is Jesus Christ! We need to follow him with all that we are.
Through the mountains and valleys that we go through in our lives we need to stay close to our leader, Jesus, and follow him wherever he leads. If we decide that we don’t want to follow him anymore we won’t be able to make any progress in our life and our life will not have the meaning and purpose that God has for us.
Let us always remember that Jesus is our leader and that we need to continually follow him wherever we go in our lives.

Aim to Please God

Have any of you ever shot a bow and arrow before? How did you do? Did you know that if you close your eyes you wouldn’t do a very good job! First you would take an arrow and put it on the string and then you would draw it all the way back. Then do you just shoot it? No! What do you have to do first?
You have to aim it!
Often times people just live their lives anyway they choose but they often wonder why they keep missing the mark. They aren’t fulfilled. They aren’t successful. They don’t have joy. It is because they are aiming at the wrong thing! What are some things that we can aim at, that are not the right thing? (Allow kids to answer.)
Money. Friends. Job. Grades. All kinds of things. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:9 that we need to aim at pleasing God. When we aim to please Him then we will be successful in all that we do.

Following Instructions

- Cake mix
- Large bowl
- Stirring spoon
- 2 Eggs
- Salt
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
Object Lesson
Does anyone here like cake? What is your favorite kind of cake? I love cake and I would like to bake one for you! (Take out cake mix.)
This is going to be the most delicious cake ever! It says to empty the cake mix into a large bowl. (Rip open the box and pour the contents into the bowl.)
Now it says to add in 2 eggs. (Take the eggs shell and all and smash them into the bowl.)
Next it says to add in some sugar. I don’t have any of that, but I am sure that salt would be just fine instead. (Dump in some salt.)
Let’s see, now it says to add in some flower. I don’t have any sugar, but I found this white powder in my cabinet so I guess I can add that in. (Dump in some baking soda.)
Then it says add in oil and stir. I don’t have any water but I have some vinegar and I love putting oil and vinegar on salad so they are probably the same. (Pour in some vinegar and stir as the reaction occurs.)
Oh no! This is a huge mess! I don’t understand what went wrong!
I guess I didn’t follow the directions very well did I?
In 1 Kings 2:3 it says that we should follow God’s directions and we will succeed in all we do. Since I didn’t follow the directions on this box I won’t get a delicious cake, and if we don’t follow God’s directions then we won’t be very successful either.
