How is Your Attitude?

Attitude object lesson

Key Verse

Philippians 2:14-15

Additional Verses

Philippians 4:8-9; Philippians 2:5; Proverbs 17:22

Materials Needed

  • Two identical balloons tied to string. One is filled with air and one if filled with helium. If you want to you can draw a smiley face on the back of the one with helium and a sad face on the other one, but that is not necessary.

Object Lesson

(Hold the string close to the balloon to they both look the same as they are resting on your hand.)

Does anyone know what I am holding in my hand? Yes! I have a couple of balloons. These both look the same, but you will find that they are actually very different.

In Philippians 2:14 it says that we should do everything without grumbling and complaining. Do you ever complain about anything? Maybe you don’t like working hard? Maybe you don’t like a certain kind of food? Maybe you complain about the weather? God doesn’t want us to do this.

When we grumble and complain it actually drags us down. In Proverbs 17:22 it says that a merry heart is good like a medicine. When we are positive and have an uplifting attitude it build us up. This kind of attitude pleases God.

So many people always walk around with a bad attitude. Sometimes you can’t even tell, but deep inside their attitude is bad. How is your attitude? Is it good or bad?

One of these balloons has a good attitude and one of them has a bad attitude. Can you tell which is which? One of them if very uplifting and the other one is always down, down, down. Let’s see which is which!

(Let go of the balloons. You may want to make sure you hold on to the end of the string so the helium doesn’t fly away. One balloon should now float up and the other one will sink down.)

Which one do you think has the uplifting and positive attitude? That’s right! This one that is floating. Which one do you think has the bad attitude and is always down? That’s right, this sad one hanging here.

Which balloon are you like? The one with a good attitude or a bad attitude?

The Cards You Were Dealt

cards you were dealt

Key Verse

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Additional Verses

Ephesians 5:20; Philippians 4:6; Colossians 3:17

Materials Needed

  • Deck of cards

Object Lesson

Have you ever played a card came before? Maybe Old Maid, or Uno, or Go Fish? The way that many card games work is that they start out by dealing you a certain number of cards. (Deal out several cards for yourself.) They you have to look at your cards and play the game. Sometimes you get a really good hand of cards and you can play really well. Other times, your cards aren’t so good, but you still have to play the best that you can. Sometimes you can still win even if you were dealt a bad hand of cards.

In our life we were all dealt a hand of cards. Some of us have really good cards, and some of us have cards that are not so good. You might look at my cards and think that they are a piece of cake, and I may look at yours and think that they are easy, but that really doesn’t matter. We just have to play the cards that were given to us.

It’s easy for us to be thankful for the good cards that we have, but often times we aren’t thankful for the bad ones. God wants us to play both the good and bad as best as we can and be thankful and glorify him and praise him regardless of what we were dealt.

In my life I was dealt a set of cards, some are good and some are bad. (Set down some of the cards one-by-one while you say some good things and bad things that have happened in your life.) Some of these things are good and some are bad, but these are the cards that I was dealt. My job is to use them and play them the best way that I possibly can.

Many people just want to complain about their cards. Instead let’s be thankful for them and use them for the glory of God!

Always Complaining

Joke about Complaining

There was a lady that was habitual grumbler and was constantly complaining about everything. One day her preacher thought he had discovered something that she could be happy about, because her farm crop was the best one for miles around. When he met her, he said with a big smile,”You must be very happy! Everyone is saying how healthy your potatoes look this year!”

She replied grimly, “True they’re pretty good, but what am I going to do when I need some bad ones to feed the pigs?”

The Black Spot

Negativity object lesson

Key Verse

Philippians 4:8

Additional Verses

Ephesians 5:20; Romans 8:28; 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Materials Needed

  • Sheet of paper with black dot in the center. You could make several of these and hand them out if you prefer.

Object Lesson

(Hold up the sheet of paper with the spot on it).

Can anyone see what I have here? (Wait for responses. The kids should say “a dot,” or “a black spot.)” Is that all you can see?

You missed what I really have! I actually have a perfectly good piece of paper here but the only thing that most of us could see was the little tiny black dot.

Often times when we look at our life the only thing we can see is the black dot. The bad things. The negative. And then we focus on them.

We don’t look at the good things that God has done. We don’t count our blessings. We just focus on the bad.

Tell me some things that are good in your life? Some things that you have to be thankful for. (Wait for responses and then write a bunch of the good things on the paper and hold it up.)

See! There is a lot more good than bad here. The Bible tells us in Philippians 4:8 to think about the good and positive things in our lives, not the bad things.

Did you know that God can even make the things that seem bad work out for Good? He says so right in Romans 8:28! He says that he will work everything together for good for the that love Him. Do you love Him?

(Draw a cross over the top of the spot.)

See, even the things that were bad in our live God works out for good!

The next time you are tempted to complain, instead try to look at the good things that are going on. And you want to watch God work in an amazing way!
