The Missing Piece (Matthew 18:12-14)

Materials Needed
- 100-piece puzzle
- sturdy cardboard
- glue
Preparation
Assemble the 100-piece puzzle, leaving just one piece missing. Glue the puzzle to the cardboard. Alternately, you could have the children assemble the puzzle as they enter for class and you could hide the last piece in the room. When the children discover that the last piece is missing, you can ask them to look for it until they find it, then teach the object lesson.
Object Lesson
(Show the kids the puzzle) Do you like my puzzle? This is a one hundred-piece puzzle. (Allow response) Oh it has a piece missing?! Then I guess my puzzle only has 99 pieces now! Did you guys ever make a puzzle and then realize that there is one very important piece missing? It sort of ruins the whole puzzle doesn’t it? What do you usually do when you discover that a puzzle piece is missing? (Allow response) Yes!You look for it. You look under the couch, and under the cushions or you check the closet or you check all the other puzzle boxes to see if it’s in there, right?
If you’re anything like me, you cannot rest until you find that last piece because it just bothers you that the puzzle is not complete. Well, Jesus told a story that reminds me of this puzzle. He said in Matthew 18:12 “If a shepherd has one hundred sheep, and one wanders away and is lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others and go out into the hills to search for the lost one? 13 And if he finds it, he will surely rejoice over it more than over the ninety-nine that didn’t wander away! 14 In the same way, it is not my heavenly Father’s will that even one of these little ones should perish.”
Now, Jesus told us this story to show us how much he wants each one of us to be saved. He loves us so much, that He is always searching for us and calling us to be saved. It is not God’s will that any one of us be lost, or separated from God. He rejoices, or is happy, thrilled, delighted when even one person comes to know Him and is saved. Sort of like how we feel when we search and search and search and finally find that last puzzle piece (Put in the last piece of the puzzle). God’s family is not complete without you being a part of it.

- 2 Balloons
- Needle
Object Lesson
Have you ever been angry before? I sure have! (Tell a personal story about when you got angry).
It is so easy for us to get angry when things don’t go just the way we want them to. Maybe you get angry when someone says something mean to you? The bible says in Ephesians 4:6 that it is okay to get angry, but it is not okay to sin.
(Take one of the balloons and hold it up)
This balloon is going to represent you. You wake up in the morning and you are getting ready to go so you go to grab yourself some of your favorite cereal but then you notice that it is all gone! (Blow up the balloon a little). Then you get on your bike to take a bike ride and you realize that your tire is flat. (Blow more into the balloon). You see one of your friends but instead of greeting you he points at you and starts to laugh. (Blow it up the rest of the way and then tie it off).
Many times instead of giving their anger to God we let it built up inside of us almost to the point where we feel like we are going to pop. Then your mom comes and asks your to clean up your room. (Pop the balloon with the needle). BAM! You get mad and start yelling and dishonoring your mother. You were angry, but not you have exploded and started to sin.
(Take out the other balloon).
Instead of letting it all build up when something bad happened you should give it to God. (Blow up the second balloon). Then pray and ask God to help you to handle it better. (Let all the air out) Maybe something else gets you upset. (Blow the balloon up again). But you remember that God does not want us to sin when we are angry. (Let the air out again).

Will never hurt me.
We have all heard this rhyme, and although it sounds kind of cute, it’s really not true at all! Words do hurt. If someone says something rude to you or lies about you, you may smile on the outside and try to look tough, but on the inside it hurts a lot! It feel like a nail has been gaming driven straight into you.
(Take out the board and nail a nail into it).
Each time someone says something hurtful it is like driving another nail into you. (Drive another nail).
Maybe sometimes you get angry and say something mean or hurtful to someone else. Guess what that is doing? That is like driving a online game nail into them. (Drive another nail).
Sure, sticks and stones may break our bones, but words can certainly hurt you! (Drive another nail).
(Hold up the board with the nails in it).
The sad thing is that many people go through life with all of these nails stuck in them. They don’t go away very easily. Maybe is something a parent said, or a friend, or a teacher that still bothers you years and years later.
Only through God’s help and being willing to forgive other can these nails be taken out.
