  • One Way Sign

Object Lesson

Have you ever been driving down the road with your mom or dad and you see a sign that looks like this (hold the sign up). What does this sign say? One Way!

What does that mean? It means that you can only drive in one direction on that road, right? You cannot have cars driving one way and cars driving the other way, right? If you happen to be going the wrong way on that road, then you are in big trouble because you might crash or it might be a one lane road and your car might not fit next to another car that’s going the other way.

It might be a big mess and a dangerous situation too. Well, the Bible tells us that Jesus is the only way to God.

In John 14:6, Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” Some people believe that there are many ways to God. Some think that if they do a lot of good things in their life and if they are mostly a nice person, then they will get to go to Heaven. But they are wrong and they are going the wrong way!

Some people believe that if they trust in Buddha or Muhammad or another god that they will get into Heaven, but they are wrong. Jesus is the Son of God and he proved that in many ways which we talked about today. Jesus is the one that we can trust to tell the truth and he said that He is the One Way to the Father God.

God’s Gift of Grace

Grace object lesson

Key Verse

Ephesians 2:8-9

Additional Verses

John 3:16; 2 Timothy 1:9; Romans 6:23

Materials Needed

  • Dollar Bill

Object Lesson

(Hold up the dollar bill)

Have you ever seen one of these before? Of course you have! It is a dollar bill. Tell me some ways that you can get one of these dollar bills?

(Let the kids respond. If they don’t know you can coach them with earn it, steal it, borrow it, have one given to you, and etc.)

There are many ways that you can get this dollar bill. But let me ask you, who does this dollar bill belong to? That’s right it belongs to me. And what can I do with this dollar bill? Anything I want to! I need a helper to assist me. (Choose a kid to help you.)

Does this dollar bill belong to you? (No) Who does it belong to? (You) Would you like to have it? (Yes) Here! It is yours, you don’t even have to do anything for it! It is a gift!

God’s grace is a lot like that dollar bill. It is something that has great value. But there is nothing that you can do to earn God’s grace, favor and forgiveness. In fact, Ephesians 2:8-9 says that it is a gift from God. If we were able to work for it we could brag about it, but God just wants to give it to us for free!

Grace is simply getting something nice that we don’t deserve. My helper didn’t deserve that dollar bill, but I gave it to him/her anyway. Even though we don’t deserve God’s grace he offers it to use freely.

Torn Apart

sin object lesson

Key Verse

Romans 6:23, 1 John 1:9

Additional Verses

Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8-10; Galatians 5:16

Materials Needed

  • Newspaper

Object Lesson

How many of you have ever made a mistake before? Many times in life we do things that are very wrong and we say that we made a mistake. The problem is that we often call our sins “mistakes” when really they are much more than just a mistake. A mistake is something that you make on a test because you don’t have the right information.

When we sin we are often doing it on purpose, it’s not a mistake. We often do those bad things over and over again. Do you know what happens when you sin? It destroys relationships. (Take the newspaper and tear it in half.)

This paper is now destroyed and that’s what happens when we sin. How would you feel if one of your friends told you a lie or stole something important to you? You’d probably be really upset and hurt. It would hurt your relationship. How would you feel if they came to you and said “sorry” but in a way that shows they aren’t truly sorry for what they have done? You would probably realize that they aren’t truly sorry.

In Romans 6:23 it says that the wages of our sin is death. That means that our sin have destroyed our relationship with God. It was more than just a mistake, it was sin. But in 1 John 1:9 it says that if we confess that sin to God, He will forgive us.

The first step in restoring our relationship with God is simply admitting to him that we realize we have done something wrong.

Object Lesson

How many of you guys got some Valentines this past week? Maybe you got some at school or at sports or scouts. When I was a kid, I loved to make one of those Valentine mailbox thingies to collect all of my Valentines in. After a Valentine party at school, I always counted how many Valentines I got and had fun reading all of the silly messages and I especially loved looking at all of the good candy that I got. I especially loved those little Candy Conversation Hearts with love messages written on them (take some out and eat one). It made me feel good too, to know that my classmates liked me enough to give me a little card and let me know that I had a friend. Did you guys know that there is someone that loves you even more than your friends love you? And there is someone that loves you even more than your parents and grandparents love you. This Guy sent you a Valentine and it isn’t one of those little cards with a lollipop attached. It’s not a dozen roses that cost $100 or a 5lb box of chocolates. God loves you so much that he sent the most expensive Valentine in the world to you. We are going to read about the Valentine that God sent you.

John 3:16 says “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

So, who sent you a Valentine? (God)

What was the Valentine? (Jesus)

Let’s read some more about this wonderful Valentine: Romans 5:6 says When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.

What was God trying to tell us with his Valentine? (He loves us so much that he was wiling to send his only Son to die for us).

So God’s Valentine to us is Jesus and the forgiveness that he bought for us. God really loves us more than anyone else could.

Do you love him back? God has shown us how much he loves us and he loves to hear from us that we love Him too.  (Ask the kids to give a reason why they love God. He provides, forgives, cares for us, gives us joy, etc.). Work together as a class to write some “Conversation Hearts” to God on colored paper hearts. Attach them to a display Board with thumbtacks. Here are some ideas:

Love U

Praise U

Thank U

UR Awesome

UR Good

U Rock

Call On Me

U Care

U Rule

UR My God

Charged Up

RC Cars

Key Verse

John 4:34

Additional Verses

John 6:38; John 17:4; John 5:30

Materials Needed

  • A remote control car or train
  • Dead batteries
  • New batteries
  • Screwdriver (if needed) to put the batteries in

Preparation

Begin this lesson with the dead batteries inside the car, but keep the new batteries out of sight.

Object Lesson

Do you guys like remote control cars? (Allow for response).

Me too! It is so much fun to ride them around the yard, through mud puddles and over anthills. Or in the house you can, chase your mom around with them. Who wants to come up here and demonstrate how to drive this car? Now, I need someone who really knows what they are doing. (Choose a student and give them the controller and tell them to drive it. Since the car has dead batteries it obviously won’t work).

What’s the matter? I thought you said you knew how to drive one of these things! Try it again. Does anyone know why this car won’t work? (Allow suggestions).

Ok, some of you think that it might be the batteries, well let’s take a look. (Open the battery cover and show the class that it has batteries).

This car has batteries! But come to think of it, these batteries have been in this car for a long time. Let me see if I have some new ones. (Get the new batteries and put them in the car).

Ok, now why don’t you try to drive this thing? (Allow the student to drive it).

Wow, it’s working! (Have the student take a seat). In John 4:34 (NIV) Jesus tells us My food, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.” In this verse, Jesus is not talking about pizza or ice cream or even vegetables. He is talking about spiritual food. He is telling us here, that we need to give nourishment to our souls.

How do you feed your soul? (Allow for answers: reading God’s Word, spending time with God, doing God’s work).

Yeah, our souls are fed when we read the Bible and spend time with God and by telling other people about God and sharing our faith. It’s like our remote control car here. It couldn’t work because it had dead batteries, but when it received the fresh batteries it was able to do anything. Our souls are like that too. We need to keep our souls charged up. We can also keep our souls charged up by doing God’s work which is to point others to Him and to serve others.

The Best Mom

Mom Object Lesson

Key Verse

Proverbs 31:30

Additional Verses

1 Peter 3:4-5; James 1:11

Materials Needed

  • Several different apples of different colors, shapes, sizes, the more different and interesting, the better.

Object Lesson

I brought a bunch of different apples with me today. (Hold up an apple)

This one is yellow and it’s really sweet. (Take a bite) It’s not super crunchy, though. (Hold up another apple) I really like this one here because it is green, which is my favorite color. (Take a bite) Wow, this one is really tart! (Grab another apple) This one has a funny shape to it and it has a little bruise over here. (Take a bite) You know, it still tastes good, though.

After tasting all of these apples, I have figured out that they are all a little different, but they are all good apples! These apples remind me a lot of moms. We all have moms and they are all very different from each other and that is okay. God hand-picked our moms just for us.

The Bible tells us that God “knit us together in our mother’s wombs.” He made us just for our moms and He made our moms for us. Now, when I was kid I would sometimes wish that my mom was more like my friend’s mom because she let her kids eat more snacks. My other friend’s mom would take us to a lot of fun places and buy us stuff. She would also let me go on vacation with them sometimes. I thought she was such a cool mom! But was she really a better mom than my mom? No way! My mom was the best mom for me.

She took care of me, came to all of my ball games, she took me to church, and she still helps me all the time today. You see there is more than one kind of good mom. Some moms talk really sweet, and some moms are a little more tough. Some moms have lots of money to spend and some moms don’t. Some moms are fat and some are thin, some are young and some are old. But they can all still be good moms. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

This verse shows us that one of the most important things to being a good mom is that she fears the Lord. Fearing the Lord means that she cares about her relationship with God. It means that she wants to please God and so she tries to follow His ways. That’s what makes a good mom.

Peaceful Anchor

anchor object lesson

Key Verse

Galatians 5:22-23

Additional Verses

Philippians 4:6; 2 Thessalonians 3:16; John 16:33

Materials Needed

  • A boat anchor or a picture of an anchor

Object Lesson

(Hold up the anchor)

Can anyone tell me what this is? (Allow for responses). That’s right. But can anyone tell me what it does? (Allow for answers, then explain).

A boat anchor is made to keep a boat from drifting away at sea. The way it works is you would tie the anchor to a long rope that is attached to the boat. When you want to keep the boat secure, you would lower the anchor on the rope down to the ocean floor. It’s really heavy and made of metal so that it sinks in the water easily. These sharp hooks on the anchor dig into the ocean floor and keep the boat from moving.

People use them when they are not sailing in their boats, to keep them near the dock. If they didn’t use an anchor, then when they came to go sailing, their boat wouldn’t be there anymore! Sailors also use anchors in bad stormy weather to keep their boat from drifting off course.

Now, if a boat was using an anchor, you wouldn’t be able to see it, because it is hidden under the water, but you would notice that the boat stays firmly secured.

This anchor reminds me a lot of God’s peace. God’s peace can hold us securely even in the storms of life. When tough times come in your life, and they WILL come, God’s peace can hold you securely. Peace is knowing that no matter what is happening God will never leave you or forsake you. Peace is knowing that even though this world has troubles, we can look forward to being with Jesus in Heaven one day where it is truly peaceful all the time.

When we have God’s peace, other people will notice that we are not worried and bothered by the things that are going on in our lives. Then you can tell them that Jesus is the peace that anchors you.

Jesus is our Life Saver

life savers

Key Verse

Romans 10:9

Additional Verses

Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38

Materials Needed

  • Package of Life Savers candy.

Object Lesson

Imagine that you are out on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean. Everything is calm and beautiful and then you see some dark clouds out on the horizon rolling in. They are getting closer and closer and you see the flashes of lightning and hear the clap of the thunder. Before you know it, the boat is getting tossed and thrown by the violent waves. As you are making your way across the deck a huge wave hits the boat and carries you overboard into the cold ocean water below.

As you struggle in the water, you realize that you need help. What do you think could help you? (Wait for responses).

Maybe a life saver? I just happened to bring some with me!

(Take out the roll of life savers and show everyone.)

I heard that these can save you if you ever fall over board but I am not really sure how well they would work. Do you think these would work very well?

Well, I guess these life savers won’t work to save you from drowning in the ocean but they might save you from having bad breath! (If you want to you can hand out a life saver to everyone).

The Bible says that we all have sin in our life and that sin will result in death. We need to be saved. Now one of these life savers won’t help us very much but we have Someone who can save us from the sin that tries to drown our lives. His name is Jesus Christ.

The way we are saved from sin is by doing what it says in Romans 10:9. It says that we have to say that Jesus is Lord and believe that in our heart. That’s it. It isn’t very complicated at all. Jesus is our life saver and the only one that can save us from sin and death.

Disappearing Sin

Thumb Tip

Key Verse

1 John 1:9

Additional Verses

Isaiah 43:25; Matthew 6:12; Psalm 103:12

Materials Needed

Preparation

Make sure you practice this in advance. Using a thumb tip is easy, but it does take a little practice to master. Practice in front of a mirror to begin and then friends and family, until it becomes natural.

Object Lesson

Have you ever done anything wrong before? Maybe you told a lie, or swore? Maybe you disobeyed your parents or took something that didn’t belong to you? These things are called sins. A sin is anything that goes against what pleases God.

(Take out the tissue)

Let’s say that this nice white tissue represents your life. It is all nice and clean. But one day you tell a lie.

(Write Lie on the paper.)

What is another sin that you may have done?

(Wait for responses and then write them down on the tissue.)

As you can see this piece of paper is full of sins now. It doesn’t look very clean anymore does it? There is nothing that we can do that can make these things go away. In 1 John 1:9 it says that if we confess our sins to God he will remove the sins for us! That sounds like a pretty good deal doesn’t it? In Psalm 103:12 it says God will take our sins and move them as far as the East is from the West!

(Begin pushing the tissue of sins into your closed hand containing the thumb tip)

Although you can’t remove the sins on your own, we serve a God that is faithful to remove them for us. We just need to ask him. We need to repent of the sins we have committed and follow Jesus.

(Push the final bit in with your thumb, and remove the thumb tip from your hand and show your hands are empty)

When God removes our sins he takes them completely away so far that we can never find them again. Let us ask God to forgive our sins today!

Recharge Your Batteries

Recharge

Key Verse

Joshua 1:8

Additional Verses

Psalms 119:105; Matthew 4:4; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12; Psalms 119:18

Materials Needed

  • Cell phone with charger
  • Bible

Object Lesson

(Hold up the cell phone.)

Have any of you ever used one of these before? What are cell phones used for? (Wait for responses.) I remember when cell phones were used only for making phone calls! Now they are used for so many more things! You can play games, listen to music, navigate, watch movies, and so much more. It is amazing how much you can do with a cell phone.

There is a problem that all cell phones have. Have you ever used a phone for a long period of time, maybe playing a game or listening to music, and then you glance up and see that the battery indicator shows the battery is almost dead?

What a horrible feeling that is! What do you do when that happens? Do you throw the phone into the garbage? Do you toss it on the ground and stomp all over it? Do you smash it with a huge hammer? No way! Of course not.

What you need is one of these!

(Hold up the phone charger.)

You have to plug the phone into the power and recharge it. The battery will start to charge up immediately and you will soon be at full power once again.

Did you know that your life is a lot like this cell phone. You may play games, watch movies and talk with your friends, but soon your spiritual battery begins to drain. You need to get recharged! You need to take time to read God’s Word on daily daily basis like it says to do in Joshua 1:8.

As you read God’s Word your faith and power will begin to increase and you will be able to do great things for the Kingdom of God. If you don’t take time to recharge your spirit will be weak and not able to do great things.

Just like you always remember to recharge the batteries in your cell phone make sure that you recharge your spiritual batteries each day also.
